Fia
Over 1.5 billion people don’t have access to God’s Word in their own language.* To respond to this overwhelming need, churches and believers have begun to take on the responsibility of translating God’s Word into their own languages for their own people. Word Collective supports these translators by creating resources and translation processes that are accessible, understandable, and comprehensive.
Our Familiarization, Internalization, and Articulation (Fia) resources help translators become familiar with the cultural, historical, linguistic, literary, and geographical context of each passage in the Bible. Translators then use that information to internalize the passage by engaging with its meaning on a deeper level. By the end of the Fia process, they articulate a first draft of how they might translate a biblical passage. Fia resources include:
- Book Introductions that help translators understand the whole story and context of each book of the Bible.
- A series of 6 steps, in both audio and written form, that walk translators through the Fia process for each passage in the Bible.
- A Glossary that helps translators fully grasp the context and meaning of key biblical terms through written and audio descriptions, activities, and relevant media.
- Media for each passage that allows translators to visualize biblical objects and geography. Our media includes photos, illustrations, and maps.
- Translations of Fia materials in major languages.
- A Video Bible Dictionary that gives people a frame of reference for biblical objects, places, and geography through short, accessible videos.
All Fia materials are open source, checked by certified Bible translation consultants, and adaptable to fit each translation team’s needs. As of 2025, Fia has been:
- Used by over 500 translation teams translating into both spoken and signed languages.
- Used by over 9 Bible translation organizations.
- Integrated into four translation paradigms, including oral Bible translation (OBT), church-based bible translation (CBBT), and holistic Bible translation.
